Breaking Up Dreams

Breaking up dreams can be highly unsettling, especially if you’re in a good relationship. These dreams may involve breaking up with your partner or being broken up with by them.

Regardless, these dreams are often extremely vivid and contains other hidden menings.

So could this break-up be some sort of warning dream?  Is there something secretly wrong with your relationship? Could this dream be picking up on what is to come in the future?

Why we break up in our dreams?

If we go with the analytical psychologist route, breaking up in a dream might have more to do with the dreamer’s repressed feelings and unconscious desires. There may even be an element of wish fulfillment if the dreamer wants to exit a relationship.

This is why we often break up with our friends as well in our dreams. Changes seem to be taking place within the dreamer and not the other way around.

Remember no two dreams or relationships are the exact same, so we cannot just give a generic answer to suit all dreamers. Furthermore, if you are the one who breaks up with someone than the meaning takes a totally different turn.

#1. Breaking Up and Fearing the Worst

If you have ever experienced a break up, you know how devastating it is. Talk about putting your heart in a blender and stirring it up.  One possible reason why had a dream about breaking up would be related to your unconscious fears of being hurt being alone.

Breakups are sometimes so intense they bring physical pain along with emotional pain due to the same parts of the brain being impacted. We may even feel similar sensations temporarily when waking from these dreams.

Usually dreams are coded in metaphors and symbols, but break up dreams are more direct. Your fears are directly being projected in your dream. Your dream is making you acknowledge these repressed feelings that you carry around with you all day.

#2. Changes in the Relationship

Are you going through personal change currently? Maybe you’ve noticed that your partner is changing, but can’t be sure how. Sometimes dreams of a break up mimic death, but that may be advantageous. Why? Because the old person that used to be is no longer.

So this is why a change mimics death or a break up because this person that you used to know has separated themselves from you. Something you may have not accepted has moved itself away from you.

#3. Problems in Your Relationship

To answer the burning question you probably have in your heart: Yes, its is quite possible that your break up dream is implying there are problems in your relationship.

It might either be unconsciously picking up on your partner is moving away from you. You may think you’re happy together right now, but some part of yourself recognizes that something’s wrong.

Break up dreams encourage you to examine the things in your relationship that are not so close with you anymore. Perhaps this is emotional support, love, happiness, fun. In contrast, you may be fighting more and not consciously aware of it.

#4. Breaking Up is Good for You

Breaking up in your dream means that things will be different. You might have more freedom to do what you want. You’ll have extra time. One silver lining of a relationship ending is the extra time you’ll have, especially on weekends. It’s a great chance to do the stuff you’ve been wanting to do, like getting more active or hanging out with friends. You might in fact have more time for yourself hinting at being more creative and being who you really want to be.

Breaking up in your dream doesn’t necessary have to be such a bad thing, maybe it is you breaking up with yourself. The old you may be projected on your current partner causing the break up.

#5. You want to break up but are too afraid

It is quite possible that your dream is what Freud called a wishful fulfillment dream. Breaking up can be hard even though you are the one that has to do it. If you’re miserable in a relationship, you’re better off not being in it. The unconscious mind doesn’t care about your feelings, it hits you right square in the face whether you are prepared for it or not.

Breaking up with people isn’t fun – even if the relationship is well past its expiration date. Do you really want to break up with this person but too afraid to pull the plug? If so, it’s best not to string your person along any further.

#6. Are You an Emotional Wreck?

Sometimes our dreams make us fear the worst, but what happens if you are so insecure within that you cannot bare the fact you might be alone for the rest of your life?

If your dream is really staying with you and keeps occurring night after night, there might be an underlying psychological cause. Your dream is your friend trying to help you bring this to your attention. No matter how strong your relationship may be, you’ll feel safer and more stable alone or in a better one.

#7. The Spiritual Meaning of Breaking Up

Oddly enough, we actually break up in our dreams only to get back together again. Sure, this might be a dream about your turbulent relationship or trying to find common group as in most relationships do. But if we take a step back and look at this break up dream from a Jungian perspective, this may actually be related to your own inner energy.

According to Jung, he believed that the psyche (mind) of the dreamer consists of opposite counterparts such as the yin and yang; or what he described as the Anima (male) or Animus (female) of the dreamer. Basically your dream about breaking up represents unifying with your own masculine and feminine energies – by breaking up the old energy changes only to be reclaimed again.

Your dream will use your partner as the person you are searching for within yourself.

He or she is a mere fraction of what you are finding within yourself to become complete within. The yin balances the yang, the up must have a down, the left compliments the right. You are searching for your balance within.

In my dream, my current bf breaks up with me and leaves me for someone I know but he’s never met before. This is the second time I’ve had this dream and he’s left me for two different people. The situation is always the same though, it’s peaceful. I drop him off, we talk in front of my replacement for a while and he tells me it’s temporary and we will be together again. I always wake up crying and unable to breathe.

In my dream gaz has been having an affair with Sarah behind my back and everyone knows except me. He has been meeting with her behind her husbands back who doesn’t know either. My friends all take her side and turn against me despite the pain this has caused me. I feel utterly betrayed with no way out. Both of them act very differently to how… Read more »

I’m frustrated. I keep dreaming that my husband and I break up/divorce – sometimes I initiate it – sometimes he does – sometimes I just find myself in a different house with a different man (someone I would NEVER be interested in and a hovel instead of a home). We moved several months ago to a new area – new job/new home. My husband says I’m insecure about the job and my move (which I’m sure is true because I’m the boss now and nervous to do a good job). If that’s true – why is my husband and my… Read more »
