Flying Dreams: Lucid
Flying dreams and lucid dreaming seems to go hand and hand, but there is a fine line between the ability to “control your dreams,” and randomly flying in your dream.
It is not uncommon for people to practice the art of lucid dreaming just to experience the amazing rush of flying. The feeling can be as euphoric and liberating to the mind and spirit.
Alternatively, this is not actually necessary for a dream to be described as lucid. It has long intrigued scientists as it incorporates self-awareness and control, which are elements of wakefulness into dreaming. In order to properly decode the meaning of your dream you will have to whether you could control it or not. In this case, were you flying deliberately and consciously, or without control and direction?
Analyzing Flying Dreams
Dreams speak to us in a language often in images and metaphors relating to our personal lives. Thus, they offer hints at your weakness, strengths, and future possibilities. While flying could be classified under a “lucid type” dream it actually contains very positive symbolism.
People who often experience flying dreams notice a connection to a new transitional phase in their lives. In fact this can be mimicked as being able to take off randomly at any given moment. In life we all experience exciting times that make us happy we are living on this earth.
These powerful symbols appear during specific times in your life where change is imminent. However, you will need to figure out if flying is relating to an internal or external issue. I often dream that I am flying before big changes I’ve made like moving to a new house or starting a new venture.
Also, are you flying in a way that makes you feel free, or a way that indicates a desire to be free of someone or something? If your flying dream makes you feel hurried, anxious, or nervous, it may indicate there is a situation in your waking life that you should fly away from.
Not to be discouraged if you only flew for a short period of time, or maybe you jumped high up but landed – these dreams are hinting at not giving up and the virtue of continuing to try.
Spiritual Connection
There seems to be a connection between flying and spiritual ascension, or the process of spiritual awakening that moves you into a higher frequency. Similar accounts have shown that astral projection and outer body experiences tend to occur during times of spiritual awakenings, or increased psychic abilities.
In most cases flying can be comparable or related to an O.B.E or astral projection. If flying or floating in dreams tends to mimic the experience felt during an out of body experience, then its possible the dreamer may have an increased their vibrational frequency.
For the most part once you have a dream flying without any difficulty it is a good omen that will bring future luck and self guidance. It may be the beginning of a spiritual breakthrough innvolving the following gifts:
- ESP
- Clairvoyance
- Increased intuition
- Living in the moment
- Inner peace
Trouble Staying In The Air?
Struggling to fly can be a frustrating experience as you might only get a couple seconds in the air. In some cases dreamers often experience lifting off the ground but coming right back down. These dreams are very symbolic and suggest something might be holding you back from advancing to the next stage in life.
Your dream might provide you with clues to show you where you might be lacking confidence or advancement. You can reflect on the people around you, location, and the context.
Try and think what was stopping you from taking off in your dream whether it was a you, a friend or a building that was in your way. These objects help us determine what is stopping us from moving up in the world. Your mind may be trying to fly in your dreams to overcome emotions in waking life like these:
- Stuck in life
- Trying to get to the next level or advance
- Wanting to experience a thrill but fears are holding you back
- Close to achieving your goals
- Risk taking
Scared of Flying Dreams
Since these dreams tend to be extremely vivid and the single thought of falling can bring you to the ground. Heights can either be an exhilarating or nightmarish experience.
Being afraid to fly usually highlights the dreamer’s fears that have manifested in their heads. The ego is responsible for stopping you from enjoying the fruits of life, and too much negative thinking stops you from having fun.
You might want to examine if you have control issues or trouble of letting go of the past. Maybe it’s connected to trouble setting goals too high you cannot reach.
- Resistance,
- Afraid to take a chance,
- Need for excitement,
- Connected to your anxiety and fears,
- Letting your fears control you.
Flying Dream Symbolism
It is important to know what direction where you where going when you were flying high up in the clouds. Flying upwards in your dream suggest you are now on a new level spiritually. If you were flying downwards we are trying to get more attuned to our unconscious.
If you are flying low to the ground it represents strength and determination in your life. If you are flying backwards suggests you want to relive the past and the good memories you experienced.
Hovering or flying over water bring your awareness to your emotional state, and is a metaphor for being on top your feelings. Flying over mountains connects you with the spiritual side of yourself and your inner strengths. These are both positive dream symbols.
Gliding over cities, buildings and houses are common lucid type dreams having the dreamer feel as they are superman. These dreams could suggest control over your mind, body, and soul. Do you long for more control over yourself and your surroundings?
Dreams of flying life like a bird bring your focus on your own personal freedom as well being free spirited.

Experiencing turbulence or crashing suggest issues you encounter on your way to the next stage in your journey.
I’ve had lots of flying dreams. At first I had to run and jump into the wind and itt was hard to gain altitude. Later, I could take of like Superman and jump. Then I had a series of dreams where Jesus was teaching me how to fly! He held onto my ankles and flew below me and tak to me while we flew. And He taught me how to land on people’s roofs of their houses without waking them up! Then later I was an instructor teaching others to fly! and I would try to lose them by flying… Read more »
Wow
I had a dream that I was helping chase a bad guy and then I ended up in a patrol car flying off the building and landed in a tree and saw a old deputy I used to work with.
I had this dream where I was flying over New York, but I fell and then woke up
I had a dream where I was being chased by others that wanted to harm me and I flew to escape them.
I have dreams of flying over houses and being able to go into other peoples houses and they can only see me if I let them see me. I have to jump to be able to take off and sometimes and I have to really oomph to be able to lift off
My flying dreams somewhat different. In some I am able to fly through the streets above the trees and over power lines. I feel powerful. But in most of my flying dreams I am aware that I’m dreaming and I am unable to control where I go. My mind wants to take advantage of the dream and go somewhere amazing but I’m unable to find it or get there. It’s normally dark (evening) or grey and cloudy. The more I try to control my dream the less likely I am able to get there.
i have the same type of dreams. Sometimes I’m scared but nothing bad happens to me. I just suddenly am in the air.
I have had flying dreams all my life fairly regularly. Similar to another commenter, I fly by swimming and gliding. I bend the wind or air to move thru it. When I was younger it took more effort, and sometimes I would go up and down, like Mary Poppins bouncing along rooftops. More recently I am flying fast, little effort, very high. I have had dreams of leaving the earths atmosphere and traveling into galaxy as some others have mentioned. Usually I’m am leaving behind some place or negativity, and even some times I am being chased but I am… Read more »
I know I just posted but it was about past in retrospect. I recently been having vivid dreams about seeing what looks like a colony of mostly black ants with a few reds among them. I was concerned about crushing them, and did not want to hurt them. I was also worried about them “making a big stink” because ants have a distinct odor when crushed. They were on my entryway stoop. Recent subsequent dreams have a big black scorpion among them, but I would brush it aside, fully being aware there was the potential of getting stung. Last night… Read more »
My flying dreams are always lucid. Sometimes the air turns thick and I start swimming in the air. Sometimes I’m kind of like a kite and it takes wind to blow me up in the air and then I hover using energy coming out of my hands. I fly in other various ways, but it always takes some sort of energy period I have never had one where I float effortlessly or just by wanting to do so in a lucid dream. Are these dreams considered after all projection? Why can’t I float or fly effortlessly?
I frequently have dreams where it is so easy to fly. I lift off with almost no effort and hover over my surroundings. I have dreamt of tripping & falling; but in my dream it is impossible to land hard. I just become weightless & land in the most graceful touchdown. I have recently been dreaming that I am allowing people to see that I have this ability. I am no longer flying in secret. Last night tho – I dreamt I could not come down. I was stuck at a certain elevation & could not bring my body down… Read more »
Is there someone (s) something you need to cut loose? Maybe goals being held up? Are you indecisive about some decision?
I always have my flying dream after a really crappy day. My dream starts that I am so tired I can barely walk. Like every step is a painful moment. Then I say in my dream cmon let’s go and I simply lift off the ground. And I am going forward , I go up high and really let it out then I fly fast over buildings really close. Like I am going to hit them but i just miss them. I always seem to wake up. Then fall back to sleep and it just continues. I wake up and… Read more »
I had a dream tonight. I was flying similar to a bird, but I was lying on my belly on some sort of small piece possibly square wood. I could control going up and down. It seemed like I was doing some viewing. Just relaxed flying any direction that I wanted. If it was too high I could just go down and then up again. I was flying above some sort of small town, and I liked the aera in that town when the sand was like the o e in a desert.
I have flying dreams. Not often, but just as mentioned above, it’s when I am in situations of great change and possibilities. It’s never been easy though, used an example for a work friend to describe I remember, I usually have to jump off the table or something and before I hit the ground I need to front flip 90 degrees so my feet are higher off the ground than my head.
in my flying dreams I have to flap to get airborne, but then I just move with my mind. The only trouble is I sometimes have to have someone pull me out of the air when I can’t touch down.
I often have flying dreams. In all that I can remember, I flap my arms to elevate further into the sky. Last night I was flying over a city. There were other really strange elements to my dream that I didn’t have before, nothing I’d experienced or can recall in my life. Last night in addition to flying, I would touch a person in my dream who would then see what I was seeing. The memory of my dream is fleeting but it was a powerful, movie like dream.
I actually have a recurring weird dream where I’m able to fly when I focus hard. I’m practicing to control it & gradually come down when suddenly a group of people come running to attack me & I loose concentration & can’t fly. But when they are just pounding onto me I again focus hard & narrowly escape by shooting up. Then I wake up feeling relieved.
I’ve actually seen this dream number of times. I’m not sure what psychiatrists will make out of it.
I get this dream lots
Also just last night
Last night I dreamt that I was trying to save someone if the ground and fly ..but was struggling to lift off.
I dream I was flying and could hear my grandmas that are dead were praying and on my dream there were 2 little girls that were praying but I Don’t know who the girls are and they were telling me they love me the wired thing is they were praying the Prayer to the death. I’m still trying to figure out what does it mean. Does anyone know what it means?
Your ancestors (known and the unknown) are wanting to help you?
Perhaps a transition into adulthood or change that takes you away from something related to your childhood? Maybe as a child you felt you had 2 selves, one that you showed others or just certain people and another that you kept hidden away or showed to very few people. Does that spark any ideas? In the end dream interpretation is highly subjective, and since when we sleep our brains are kind of cleaning up our memories, the best person to look for meaning in your dream is you when it comes down to it. Finding ideas like the ones in… Read more »
Since I was in my teens i had a recurring dream a few times a week were I could lift off the ground and hover above people, in my 20’s I was then able to thrust higher and take short flights, in my 30’s I can fly unrestricted very fast and even carry people whilst doing so. I have these dreams 2 or 3 times a week.
I keep having a dream/feeling like I am awake and something comes over me, but I can’t talk make any sound or move. It makes me hover through the house, dragging me right in the the air into walls, up to the roof, etc.
While I am asleep I have a scared feeling like what ever it is is trying to hurt me.
I constantly have this, 2-3 nights a week. What does it mean as I don’t like the feeling!!
Don’t be scared trust me I experienced the same thing. It’s totally natural, and it’s just a phase. The term given to this is called “sleep paralysis.” Once u over come ur fear and simply just relax you will actually “astral project.” And I swear it feels incredible! Not a lot of people can reach this level of consciousness but it means you are very balanced. And when I say balanced, I mean physically and spiritually. And if you still have any doubts let me just guess and say this ONLY happens while laying back, facing an upward position (not… Read more »
Based on the reading it seems like you are trying to fly but something inside is holding you back but you are externalizing this power as a being outside of YOURSELF. Are you flying in your current or childhood home, reflect on who is/was influential in your life in either place? Ask yourself what are/were you afraid of in your waking life that you need/needed to learn to let go of? Freedom starts when you can untie the knot that keeps you grounded in worry and take control over where YOU want to go.
I have this dream where it’s my consciousness without my body, and I just lift and go higher and higher while seeing everything get smaller, till I’m not here anymore and I see masses as I float through our solar system to the outer ring, and then there’s this jolt where it looks similar to what hyperdrive looks like on Star Trek, and then an abrupt and here I am a new Galaxy new planets and constellations, slowly drifting through, then boom take off it happens again, this continues until I see it all getting smaller and further away as… Read more »
