Whenever whales submerge in your dreams consider yourself lucky as you have just received a very important message.
The whale becomes a messenger that has been sent from the depths of your unconsciousness implying a major shift or transition will be taking place. This sacred mammal acts as a guide that brings wisdom to the dreamer — the gigantic life that underlies our own little area of awareness.
This sacred mammal has used its inner radar to communicate with you from a place that is not fully understood by the dreamer. Whales connect the dreamer with their spiritual side, psychic abilities and own inner awareness that will be unlocked. You must trust our inner gifts or else the whale is known to attack the dreamer.
Whale Symbolism In Dreams
Whales can appear metaphorically relating to a conscious shift that has recently surfaced in ones life; or a representation of God or nature – the biblical reference to Jonah, or novels like Moby Dick. A powerful symbol that bridges the conscious with the unconscious energy in hopes you will further examine your true self and purpose in life.
- Contains wisdom
- Healing mind, body and soul
- Psychic abilities
- Importance of family and community
- Inner rebirth
- Peaceful strength
- Creativity
Whale Dreams Meaning
The ocean waters are very dark and murky as the sun can only penetrate the top of the surface. Using metaphorical translation we can view the top of the surface as our consciousness, this is what we know.
Though, below the surface water (unconscious) whales rely heavily on there senses (echolocation) to navigate though the unknown. The high pitched sound travels through the water until it hits an object, then bounces back.
Having limited personal awareness, the whale in the vast ocean can represent you unconsciousness. Virtually unexplored by many, what might be sensed below connects to your intuition or psychic awareness.
The ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning. Communicating though a non conscious means, gut instincts or feelings.
Whales have an advanced sense of hearing, as sound wave travel better water. The low frequency sounds can only be heard by them and this is how they communicate from miles away.
The whales want you to explore the option that there might be communication done from means other than you are used to. An invisible communication between two individuals, conscious to unconscious, an unknown sense to the mind.
Whales are, naturally, able to sense touch all over their bodies, no matter the size. They are known to be sensitive to touch and not having thick skin. They are the true gentle giants of the water.
Whale Dream: Emotional Guide To Your Inner Self
Whales tend to appear when we are exploring aspects of our true inner self. As Socrates stated, “know thyself’ seems to be more apparent in today’s world than ever. The whale might be a representation of a guide leading you to your true porpoise; the quest to find your vision, goals, motivations, and beliefs. It is time for some introspection a need for higher awareness that never ends — it’s a life-long journey.
The unexplored areas that are unknown to you can be quite scary. The resistance or fears exploring the unknown parts of yourself can be met with an aggressive or killer whale that wants to devour you. Carl Jung stated what you resist, persists; implying whatever you ignore will only get bigger.
Its main objective of the whale is to bring you on the journey with it, whether you like it our not. Learning to trust your instincts, going with the flow and questioning your beliefs.
Despite how the whale appears in your dream it wants you to explore who you really are inside. The inability to articulate their own visions, goals, and beliefs beyond what you might know creates dissidence within.
By trusting the whale you will be able to navigate, solve problems and find out what beneath your mask. This trust is similar to the trust you will have in your higher power or higher self.

My dream presented a whale of which I was assigned to make sure it got to its destination. I was to ride on the whale over the ocean along the natural migration path of the Pacific.
I dreamt I was just consciousness near the top of an ocean. It was dark and felt miles deep. The only lit area was the area I was in and my entire field of vision was looking directly down into the depths of this ocean. A single, huge whale slowly made its way into the picture about 20 feet below me from my right. Once it was directly under me it turned and dove straight down into the dark abyss. I could feel the depth and vastness of this ocean and it terrified me when I imagined diving down into… Read more »
I cannot remember my full dream but I saw False Killer Whales swimming with me .They looked likeKiller whales but I knew they were the more benign kind. When I woke up I had to look them up as While I recognized what they were I could not bring their name to mind. I had to look it up Pseudorca. Of course. Is there something about a pod of these whales that I scarcely remember exist from Aquarium visits or biology classes (I have never seen one) that my unconscious is trying to tell me something? Why specifically false killer… Read more »
In my dream I was standing on a dock. There was a whale small humpback in the water waiting for me. Off to my right there was an immense humpback whale in the distance with long arms. It was holding a ship up and shaking the contents of that ship into it’s mouth. I was instructed to ride or swim with the smaller whale with a few other people to a new location. I got in the water and just before we swam away the gigantic whale turned it’s hugh eye to us. The smaller whale got nervous and we… Read more »
The fact it was to your right is a positive symbol and not a fluke. This will tell you that you are going in the right direction. This is why the new location appeared as this will be a shift within you. The gigantic whale will come back to you soon its just you need to find it within you. If you were feeding it fish its a very positive symbol; see fish in search bar.
The whale came up out of the ocean and was nuzzling me and my sister, almost cuddling with us, playfully. It accompanied us far up the beach, walking impossibly on its tail, up like a human being, and constantly bumping into us and rubbing itself against us. The next time I looked, the whale was gone, and my sister was wearing its skin. But it wasn’t ominous feeling, it was like a gift. Or maybe the whale had just dissolved and left the skin there for us.
They are gifts. Based off of the symbols it seems to be a rebirth within the emotional unconsciousness; it seems to me you are picking up on your sister.
I dreamt I was on the beach and all of the sudden I looked out into the sea and saw a beautiful vast size whale come up to surface and when I yelled at everyone in the beach to see this whale the whale dipped himself back in the ocean and no one saw it but me.
My dream was nuts. I live in Hawaii in real life. In the dream I am walking down the sidewalk in Waikiki and there is the ocean on one side of me and a huge pool on the other. As I am walking, I notice that there is a humpback whale jumping out of the ocean and into this tank. Like full breeches and jumps over the road back and forth from the ocean to the pool. I am trying to avoid this whole scene, but somehow I get swept up into the pool with a bunch of other people… Read more »
I am not sure really what your dream is hinting at. The pool is sort of like your conscious awareness as the ocean is the unconsciousness. If I had to guess the whale is a message from the emotional unconsciousness wanting you to communicate with it. The kitchen gloves tells you about protecting your hands; expressions shown and the washing to clean this aspect up. Kitchens are known to be symbols of transformation. Though if it bites you it can be one of two things. First, the whale is someone you know or ignoring this part about you only hurts… Read more »
My dream was a bit strange. I was in almost like a village up in the mountains and needed to take a boat to go to the big city down. All my friends took a ridiculously expensive ride down, while I decided to take the more reasonably priced boat. I was sitting in the front of it ( have done that same trip many times in the dream before, but this time it was different) and the boat transitioned through a village where the villagers seemed to throw Mayan statues in the water after they have been cut in half… Read more »
The dream seems to be mirroring your progress in life. Boats are emotional transitions after coming down from a past challenge; see mountain in the search bar. Your feet being in water tells you about that you are not completely out of this issue.
I was in a shipping container slowly sinking in the ocean breathing fine. I peaked out the air vents and saw blue just beautiful blue Sun rays underwater. As I opened the shipping container doors I saw that the container was slowly sinking next to a humpback whale. The whale just continued to swim past me and the container as if we weren’t there. Just beautiful blue sun rays underwater. Till I swam up as I broke the surface I saw I was in a indoor pool, maybe a high school pool or gym pool. Then I woke up. It… Read more »
Nice dream. The container might be a play on words as something you may carry with you, contained within you or resources stored. The suns rays tells you about growth and development but gives light to this majestic beauty that lies within you. The water and sun combine both the masculine and feminine traits; see yin and yang in the search bar.
My dream was being on a bus looking out the window, to this amazingly beautiful high seas.. so high and choppy with the largest whales so close to me swimming in the same direction as the bus was heading.. slightly spread out as I remember seeking one at a time and feeling joy, amazed by their presents and excited from their appearance, size and grace as they swam next to me, in a blue ocean waves.. black and white in colour. Oh so beautiful I wish I was back in it now. The bus was heading in the left direction,… Read more »
Buses are symbolic in the sense they transition us from one place to another, however these are more of shorter stops (transitions) that we take. But going left is bad. The mansion, like house, connects the person to the psyche/mind or inner architecture. The mansion however, mirrors just how big you are, ideas, how much you hold in yourself, and perhaps the amount of work you have put into becoming who you are. It seems the whales emerged to show you something very big and special is contained within you.
I had a dream that I saw a killer orca whale that had been cut almost in half near the tale end. When I noticed it, I voiced in my dream, “Why would someone do that?” Woke up and wrote it down as I knew it had some meaning I needed to decipher in the morning.
It could be connected to your intuition that is damaged. The tail gives it the abilily to freely move where it wants in the unconscious part of your mind linking with your emotions. However, it might also be connected with your feelings about orcas as well; poor treatment in zoos, theme parks etc…
I had a dream last night that I was in the middle of the ocean trying to swim back to land but, I couldn’t see land anywhere. I had no sense of where to swim. All of a sudden, from behind me I see a humpback whale swimming towards me quickly. At first I was scared. I thought it was the end. But, it came up from underneath me and let me ride on it’s back. I felt so much relief and comfort.
Cool dream. This is a very powerful guide that seems to want you to trust you intuition/feminine energy that will allow you to get out of this emotional state.
Thank you for responding! I will definitely start trusting my intuition 🙂
I dreamt that I was swallowed by a Blue Whale. I was never scared at any time. I was simply trying to figure out how to get out. The surroundings in the whale’s mouth were calm and silent. Nothing made me feel I was in any kind of danger if I could just figure my way out of there. Sometimes I would see myself in my Denali in the Blue Whale’s mouth and other times not. And I remember thinking that I had heard if you tickle a whale’s tongue, it will open its mouth and just as I was… Read more »
Very biblical theme. It seems to me that the whale is there to protect you and not devour you. You are essentially exploring the unconscious emotional side of you; you need to find a way out in order to transform as a person. I would tell you to read up on on Jonah and the whale story and see if you can extract something from it that reflects in your life.
To tickle the tongue might be a play on words to express, speak or communicate how you feel.
Thank you so very much! Definitely going to re-read the story on Jonah and the whale! I read my Bible every day. Although I’ve read it cover to cover before, I’m finding that the more I re-read it, the more I learn and understand. Ahhh, I never would’ve thought about a play on words like that! Thank You!!! True to life, seems whenever I try to speak up, someone shuts me down, just like the phone ringing shut down my dream. Thank you so very much for your valuable insight and your wonderful and very helpful page!
You are most welcome.
I’ve had multiple dreams with large sealife present. Whales are the dominant beings present. Sometimes they’re in a cloudy water inside a giant pool and I’m in the edge not in the water. When they submerge their mere presence takes my breath away. Other dreams they are in a large body of water like a lake and I’m hovering in air over the water looking and waiting to see where they are at. Feeling a little scared for them to submerge not knowing where they are. Other times I’ve been swimming in murky water snd feeling anxious they will come… Read more »
If the water is cloudy it points to your emotional clarity. You see the whale belongs to you or what is unconscious to you. It is very powerful but the moment it is confined in a giant pool it tells you that this energy is restricted. The whale needs to explore the depths of the water (unconsciousness). How it behaves in the lake is a positive symbol. To me it sounds as if you had progressed moving this energy out of the pool. They seem to be your guide that will get you out of diffiucat siutations in your life.… Read more »
Hi, I’ve had a dream last night where I remember 3 parts. In the middle part appeared the whale. It felt like I was in New York, even though I have never been there in my life, crossing a huge bridge over the ocean. But I saw the bridge from a bird view watching a car driving over it, after a while the bridge turned into an unfinished one, but still manageable to cross the rest. The bridge brought me to another country but there was a huge wall in front & on the sides not possible to go anywhere.… Read more »
New York might be a play on words for something “new” and the city being social networking/movement. Bridges are symbolic in the sense they allow the dreamer to transition, it becomes a connection point from the past or old you to the future; see bridge dreams in the search bar for more information. The ocean becomes a symbol of your emotional unconsciousness. The huge wall might belong to what you may have unconsciously put up to protect you or something in your way of progress. So the whale connects with the first dream in the ocean and now has come… Read more »
Thank you so much! I’m more and more aware of the shedding process and yes the fact with the social networking definitely makes sense, also I feel the season of growth coming up into life. I will check out more in your homepage since more dreams came up with a 3 killer whales just 2 days ago and I’ve remembered Your helpful page.
I had a dream that I was in a neighborhood with a friend and I looked outside the window and thought my friend was in a fight so me and someone else ran outside to “help” it wasn’t her involved and when we got there it had been over with. Then my 2 kids were in the dream and we decided to run down by the water where you could see the NY buildings and lights when I got there my kids were below me in the water, I asked my youngest how did you get down there because there… Read more »
Key symbols: Friend, fight, help, involved. Now this could be related to something. If you run down by the water you are connecting to your emotions. Buildings in our dream are symbolic in the sense they appear to be related to things we metaphorically build in our lives; a sub construct (mind/psyche) relating to principles, relationships, beliefs (see building dreams in the search bar). So the New York building could be something related to “new” that is building within you. This could have to do with your relationship with your kids. The rock that emerges seems to be metaphoric related… Read more »

I had a dream about a great white shark it tried to bite me but said i was too small then i asked if it ate seals and there was one and he ate him. I was in a large clear aquarium this is the second time i had this dream. Then i saw a dolphin that approached me and was playful and left. The aquarium can be your understanding of your emotional state; being confined and clear you are faced with some hidden threats. If find what the killer whale movements very symbolic; the connection with your feet points you towards your movement and balance. All of these mammals belong to you, or what is unconscious within your mind. I think the dream has to do with understanding these traits about yourself that you are now coming to realise. The shark however could be related to aggression or perhpas relates to someone else who tried to attack you (verbal) but went on to… Read more »
I dreamed I was on the beach that was all of a sudden disappearing under the water. In a panic cause I can’t swim I tried to climb back up from the beach but it was hard because of all the rocks. Then got scared again cause it dove deep but amazingly I was OK as… Read more »
Very symbolic. If you look at the land/shore as our consciousness whatever is below belongs to the unconscous part of you. Waves combine elements of the wind and the moon, two very powerful forces that could point to an emotional disturbance (see wind and moon dreams in search bar). The wind also belongs to the spirit so there might be a message contained within it. Next is the humpback whale that appeared in your dream. They are very symbolic images that relate to the unconsciousness; acting as a guide in times of rescue. The fact you held on to it… Read more »
Hi, Last night I had a dream of Orcas (with more white than black coloring) swimming under a bridge near my grandmothers house (in place of the train track that is there). I was standing on the bridge as a pod of Orcas swam underneath. Also on the bridge there were flowers (red roses and a brownish bronze & black lilly) growing wild. It was very beautiful and serene. Also in this same dream I was on a pile of rocks close to the waters edge petting a lone orca. 3rd part of my Orca dream was within a classroom… Read more »
Very symbolic dream. The bridge is known to connect two objects together for something to cross. This might be unconscious to you that will act as a metaphor that allowing passage; underwater shows emotional release that might have been previously held back. See bridge dreams in the search bar for more information. Flowers tell you about this new growth. If the orca contains more white than black I think it is linking to your YIN & Yang energy; pulling more towards the masculine working harmoniously within the feminine. See Yin and Yang in the search bar. Remember it contains both… Read more »
Hey. I was dreaming about beautiful orca whale, jumping out of the dark, shiny, turbulent ocean. I was standing at the shore, watching it. The dreams ended with a peaceful ocean and group of humpback whales that came to the shore. Dreams were very vivid and comforting. What could that mean?
Before that I had a very uncomfortable dreams (related to my reationship ocd) where I screamed NOOOO! at the end and woke up myself and bf. Weird
Interesting. It seems you have received a message from the unconscious part of you. But what exactly? The dream tells you about emotional instability that remains unconscious within you. This would be expressed by the dark (unconscious), water (emotions), dark (unknown), shiny (reflection of the sun/masculine). It looks like something will come from the depths of this unknown part of you only to make a major change. This would be reflected by the peaceful ocean. The humpback could have a sexual undertone that might link to your boyfriend or something so large (depths of the unconscous, mysterious, ancient) that will… Read more »
I dreamt seeing lots of baby whales sleeping only with their tale stucked out of the ocean surface from an above the ocean view, next to a shore.
Interesting. If I had to guess the dream is hinting the feminine, yin energy, emotional awareness, intuition that lays dormant within you. Why? This might be because of the fact the baby (underdeveloped) is sleeping. The shore would be your own perception or conscious awareness hoping you will investigate below the surface (unconsciousness).
